Leocadia Aleser Upper West RegionFifty-eight (58) year old Mrs. Leocadia Aleser is a Dagao from the Upper West region. She began important contributions to community development when she joined the Christian Mothers Association (CMA) in 1975. She became Secretary, and later President of the Group, helping to empower women by championing and supporting civic education, entrepreneurial training, and spiritual development among others.

Her ardent interest in community empowerment leads her to play centre role in projects that are relevant to the needs and aspirations of the communities in which she works. Mrs. Leocadia Aleser is currently the Headmistress of St Joseph Primary/JSS School in Tamale.

She has a passion for spearheading the socio-economic and spiritual empowerment of women as a means of creating wealth, improving family lives, providing better opportunities for children, enhancing living conditions and ultimately eradicating poverty in the community.

Before the intervention of JICA in the establishment and expansion of the Shea Butter industry, Mrs. Aleser had featured strongly in the inauguration of the old processing centre. With the intervention of JICA, she continues to play a key role in building the new centre. She oversees the training of the women in areas such as management techniques for managing the processing centres, as well as money management to ensure that loans are managed effectually and not only paid back, but also that they derive enough profits to boost their living standards.

So compelling was her desire to extend the borders of the shea butter business, that when she overhead the conversation of a few young men about the internet, her curiosity was sparked and she invited one of them to help the Association use the internet. This led to a big financial break when the CMA began to receive international orders for shea butter through the net.

As member of the Management Board of Directors, she ensures that proper structures and procedures are established and followed among 12 groups of 5 women each. She's an avid advocate for participatory decision making among the groups she works with, thereby promoting ownership, team work and team interest. Her work activities span across Tamale and Yendi, organizing women in Wa, Damango, and Bolga also.

Aleser also takes a keen interest in youth development. She is a member of the St. John's Church at Tamale, where she partakes in the socio-spiritual development of 50 young people, teaching and sharing spiritual truths and taking them on social excursions. At St. Joseph School, she also assists with the training of young cadets by providing them with spiritual upliftment and social skills.

Her hobbies are reading and artistic designing of calabashes.

SPV Ghana praises Mrs. Leocadia Aleser for her good works and congratulates her on her nomination as Portrait of an Excellent Woman 2008 of the Upper West region.
